Potential Risks, Complications and Side Effects of Plastic Surgery

There is no doubt that plastic surgery can bring a great change to your appearance and soon you would feel differently, with high self-esteem and confidence.  However, you should understand the fact that there will be a possibility that the body may not respond well to the surgery.   Both the short term and long-term side effects or complications should be expected especially if the surgery is not performed properly or if the patient fails to follow the after-surgery instructions seriously.

Most of the times, a hidden or unsuspected ‘side effect’ or ‘risk’ of plastic surgery appears much later, that is, the results not meeting the expectation of the patient.  Perhaps most of the side effects or risks can be controlled easily, but not this kind of ‘risk’ since it is directly related to one’s own mind or thoughts.  Many articles talk about many kinds of risks, complications or side effects, but this unsuspected ‘side effect’ or ‘risk’ of plastic surgery is never discussed as it must be.  You have to, therefore, take care of this more harmful or troublesome ‘risk’ of a plastic surgery procedure, and should talk clearly with the surgeon about your expectation vs. the results of the surgery.

Now coming to the potential risks, complications or side effects of plastic surgery that are usually attended closely in many writings on plastic surgery, we find some negative effects that can be controlled, mostly, if the necessary steps are taken on time.  Let’s see them briefly.

Improperly done surgery can create unaesthetic results, which may or may not be corrected easily.  There is always a chance of getting infection due to unsanitary operating condition or due to negligence after the surgery.  The infection can become a source of serious concern if not treated on time.

Anesthetic reactions have their own significance and dangers associated.  Airways obstruction can occur due to use of some anesthetics since these drugs can cause irritation of the throat and lungs, and may block the airways.  If not controlled immediately, brain damage or even death may result.

Blood clots may form and enter a vein causing ‘Deep Vein Thrombosis.’  Since such clots can block the flow of blood, the patient can experience stroke, heart attack or even death in more serious cases.

Blood loss can happen if there is excessive bleeding during the procedure.  As a result, the blood pressure may drop, leading to other serious complications.  Sometimes, loose blood can accumulate beneath the skin, both during or after the surgery, and has to be removed through another medical procedure.

Loosening of stitches can be noticed in some cases that, if not corrected, may lead to bleeding, pain or hernia.

If the texture, tone or shape of a body part has undergone through excessive or undesirable changes, they must be checked and corrected by the surgeon.  The patient should report any abnormality, if noticed, after the surgery.

Numbness, tingling, skin death, seroma, temporary paralysis, and many other such complications or risks are associated with plastic surgery.  However, it should be clearly understood that most of the risks, complications and side effects of plastic surgery are controllable or avoidable.

Generally, plastic surgery is considered a safe procedure but, just for the information of readers, we have briefly discussed the potential complications, side effects or risks of plastic surgery, which may or may not happen to you.  At the same time, it is also worth mentioning that most of the risks or complications can be controlled provided the procedure is done properly and the patient follows the after-surgery instructions carefully.

Dermabrasion is surgical procedure used to remove the top layer of the skin. Through this process the skin appear lot younger. It also deals with scars.
